you know, the OTHER kind of wheels
So yesterday afternoon I was trying to figure out how I could get home from campus after the softball game, as the game started at six and the last bus to Dover leaves campus at 6:10. Try to bum a ride from one of my teammates? Call one of my friends? Then I remembered: I can got home by myself. I have a bike! My adviser, who is leaving for the University of Toronto, gave me her old bike a week or so ago. I'd yet to test it out, and I don't have a helmet, so I've been reluctant to commit to what I've heard is a forty minute ride home, but I had to start sometime. I must admit that riding an unfamiliar path, partially along the highway, in the falling darkness, with no light and no helmet, was mildly terrifying. But, I made it safe and sound and completely under my own power, which felt pretty darn good, not to mention the simple joy of the wind in your face and the exhilaration of whizzing down a hill.

I've been so caught up in the car hunt recently that I'd completely forgotten that there are other ways of getting around in the summer. Ones that get FANTASTIC gas mileage.

i've got a buddy that's got a serious road bike (lightweight, with special locking shoes kinda serious) and he loves the dang thing. he's posted about it recently, too. http://mattfortune.blogspot.com/

finding a car sucks. any old mercedes diesels out there? those get great gas mileage, frequently turn over 200k and are as safe as bank vaults. only downside to 'em is that they're slower than your average glacier.

Honestly, I hadn't even considered it, but I'll poke around on Craigslist. I've been looking for a Honda or a Toyota, something small and reliable. I also found a Saturn that I'm thinking about. Any thoughts on Saturns?

saturns have a shelf life that's similar to a lot of GM autos. after 125k, it's best to look elsewhere. they lack the long-haul reliability of the japanese makes. they did/do have pretty decent fuel economy though.

vw puts out diesels all the time, and they make quite a few small cars, but there are certain year brackets where the electrics in 'em are absolutely bonkers and therefore should be avoided like the plague unless you want to consider your window switch a surprise button.

Yeah, the one I'm looking at has about 50K miles, and I wouldn't expect it to last forever. I'm just so bloody sick and tired of not having a car. Though having a bike makes it a lot easier to stomach.

oh, and while i've got your ear, have you thought about getting a motorcycle? you can get a brand new ninja 250 for 3 grand, and it'll do 105 flat out on level terrain if you really really need to. they're not crotch rockets and have a natural seating position rather than the glued-to-the-frame variety. you can take the msf course locally where they'll teach you how to ride in one weekend on their bikes and streamline the process of getting a license to ride from the state.

As sexy as motorcycles are, I don't think I'd be too keen on riding one in the winter. Which, you know, we actually have here, as opposed to some states I could mention. :P

that's a fair point. folks do ride motorcycles in winter, but usually they're pretty hardcore about it and know to get different tires for the winter months, and pick up the bikes that have advanced winter options. BMW's in particular; heated seat, heated grips, and other bells and whistles. the bummer, is that when you buy a BMW bike you really pay for it. they're incredible machines, but they have a price in proportion.

So maybe I need to find a dude with a BMW so I can ride on the back. :)

sounds like a decent plan. if that doesn't work out here's a bmw you could ride in http://nh.craigslist.org/car/717764139.html

just needs a lil fixin' up.
